A couple weeks ago I met up with Matt M. in Kalamazoo for dinner and a concert by the Corn Fed Girls at Bell's. Someone caught the last song of the evening on video and I just found it on YouTube. The sound quality isn't great, but I love the song, and the band.
The Corn Fed Girls played my birthday party last year. This year another Kalamazoo musician, Michael Beauchamp, headlined. He pretty much had the room at hello. And then there were the duets with Dena. Whew. Such a delightful night. Here's Michael performing "Marry Me," Again, the sound quality isn't great. It only hints at the soulful timbre in his voice. I suggest you also check out his MySpace page.

it doesn't suck (blood)
My friend James, who is always pointing out the good stuff to me (including yesterday's Indexed), suggested I take a listen to Vampire Weekend today. And I, in turn, am suggesting the same to you.
I also really like the cover art from their latest release:

Zeus's wife gets knocked up

Ashleigh and I went to see a preview screening of Juno tonight. It's a tad precious on the quirky tip (the soundtrack features Belle and Sebastian, 'nuff said), but I really liked the movie and its pregnant 16-year-old protagonist, Juno, played with aplomb by Ellen Page. And hey, I like Belle and Sebastian.
I also like a song featured prominently on the soundtrack, "Anyone Else But You" by The Moldy Peaches (you can click here to listen). It's used to good effect throughout and I think its lyrics are winsome and romantic in a simple way that avoids being cliche.
You're a part time lover and a full time friendI saw a singer/songwriter last weekend who was so bad I could hardly believe he was playing to such a full room (he was opening for a much better band). So I suppose I'm especially keen on (what I deem to be) interesting songwriting this week.
The monkey on your back is the latest trend
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you
I'll kiss you on the brain in the shadow of the train
I'll kiss you all starry eyed my body swingin' from side to side
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you
Here is the church and here is the steeple
We sure are cute for two ugly people
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you ...
You are always tryin' to keep it real
I'm in love with how you feel
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you
We both have shiny happy fits of rage
You want more fans, I want more stage
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you
Don Quixote was a steel driving man
My name is Adam I'm your biggest fan
I don't see what anyone can see in anyone else
but you...
